Abstract
The Philippines still ranks as one of the countries with the largest land area planted to coconut, with 3 million hectares planted to 300 million coconut trees. Coconut oil and other coconut products still rank among the top ten export productos of the Philippines. However, the productivity of coconut farms has declined, and there is now a vigorous effort to revitalize the Philippine coconut industry. Thus, it is important when replacing senile coconuts trees with new planting materials that suprior or elite breeds be introduced in order to improve the competitiveness of coconut oil in the owrld market. This paper will discuss the recent advances made towards the identification of the elite lines, especially in terms of the oil yield and the quality of the oil as reflected in the fatty acid profile. 23 ref.
