Abstract
Recent reports have suggested that the nutritional value of oleic acid may be equivalent to our better than linoleic acid (18:2n-6) because oleic acid does not lower HDL levels and/or lower apolipoprotein A-I. There are also recnt studies, which agree with many olfer studies, reporting that linoleic acid does not lowr HDL and that linoleic acid is mor eeffective than oleic acid for lowering serum cholesterol levels. Clearly, the question of whether the hypocholesterolemic effect of oleic acid is equivalent to or better than linoleic acid is a controversy that remains to be resolved. Linolenic acid (19:3n-3) has beneficial health effects, but its health and nutrional rle is separate from 18:2n-6. Lauric and myristic acids raise cholesterol levels relative to unsaturaed fats and stearic acid has a lesser effect on serum cholesterol levels, than other saturated fatty acids. Whether 16:0 is as hypercholesterolemic as 12:0 or 14:0 should be regarded as an unaswred question. 47 ref.
