While zerok-burming in replantings, either from rubber to rubber orfrom oil palm to oil palm, is already a pracrice in Malaysia, this is not so with new clearungs. Zero-burning is feasible in new clearings. In Papaua New Guinea manual felling is done 12-18 months in advance prior to mechanical stacking, while of Palau Beltung in South sumatera, Indonesia mechanical felling and stacking is done in the same year. This is possible because the ground vegetation density is light. The most signfificant advantage in the return of nutrients to the soils besides being environmentally friendly. In Malaysia and Indonesia, zero burning in new clearing is new.
