dc.date2002.
The world production of fats and oils is estimated to reach over 110 million tons in 2001. The importance of palm oil in the market for both consumer and indus trial/institutional applications is increasing, due to a steady increase in the palm oil share of the world fat and oil supply. Although various oleochemical technologies have already been established for large-scale production, the individual production steps must also be improved to meet the globalized consumer demands of today. In this paper, we consider several topics among the recent improvements and findings in peripheral applications, including novel anionic, nonionic, and cationic surfactants, modification 0il palm fractions to improve the characteristics of food additives, and inter-esterification of methyl esters by using an enzyme. These topics are considered from the viewpoint of ex panding the commercial applicability of palm oil.
