Abstract
The proposals for how chemicals will be regulated in the European Union known as Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals - REACH, are radical and reforming and will transform the regulatory environment in the European Union on the manufacturing, import and use of chemicals. Although the proposed date on implementation is likely to be during 2007 and the proposal is likely to change before it is finally adopted, there are some fundamental challenges facing the oleochemical industry and it's customers that need recognition in order to better prepare the industry for a new way of working under REACH. This paper will give a broad overview of the current status of the draft REACH legislation as it looks today and the likely impact on the oleochemical industry.
