Lethal yellowing (LY) developed in young palms held in cages in which Myndus crudus (Homoptera: Cixiidae) was present. The infected palms, less than 2 years old, included 2 cocos nucifera L., 2 Pritchardia pacifica, and a Trachycarpus fortunei. The last was in cage into which 3784 M. crudus were introduced and was 14 months old when syntoms of LY developed. It was the youngest palm in which LY has been diagnosed and confirmed by the presence of mycoplasmalike organisms in phloem sieve elements. LY also developed in 3-4 year-old palms, including 1 Phoenix canariensis and 2 Pritchardia thurstonii when these were exposed to M. crudus during periods of 5, 4 and 11 months, respectively. These results represent progress in the ability to transmit LY experimentally, because transmission was accomplished to younger palms and with a briefer exposure to vectors than previously reported.
