dc.descriptionProtocols for the detection of isoenzyme polymorphism in coconut leaf tissues have been established. Out of 6 enzyme systems tested only esterase and peroxidase produced polymorphic banding patterns. The esterase system produced a maximum of 5 bandsfor the Tall X Tall (CRIC 60) and Plus palm Tall populations. Dwarf populations showed only a limited number of bands at both loci, confirming their inbreeding nature. Using a combination of all genotypes, principal component analysis differentiated the 2 main groups: Dwarfs and Talls. The Tall X Tall and Dwarf X Tall (CRIC 65) improved cultivars grouped together, confirming their common sources of Tall material. The grouping of San Ramon and Moorock stemmed from the fact that both cultivars are specialselections for high nut weight and copra yield. The pattern of differentiation among Tall populations suggested that a relationship exists between the frequency of certain bands and palm yield potential which could be successfully used to screen coconut germplasm for desirable characters.
