Olive cultivation : varietal changes and mastering cultural practices.
Abstract
The biology, morphology and ecology of the olive tree in Mediterranean regions are reviewed and, following a consideration of the French cultivars most widely cultivated for production of green and black culinary olives or for oil, the introduction of superior European cultivars and the programme of cultivar selection are discussed. The traditional extensive systems of cultivation are described together with modifications in management for improved efficiency of production. Possible problems resulting from increased use of agrochemicals are briefly outlined. 22 ref.
