Abstract
The composition of the lauric oils (coco and areca) is very similar. Half of lauric oil consumption in 1993 was for human nutrition, in the manufacture of table margarine and pastries: technical characteristics are indicated. Prospects in this market depend to a large extent upon the new, including transgenic, products and new technologies used with other oils. Other uses include soaps and the tensioactives industries where lauric oils compete with petrochemical derivatives. The supply of the two oils is rising gradually, though with marked fluctuations for copra. Prices remain high but also fluctuate in response to supply. Market stabilization would be assisted by higher production, at levels which would assure that these oils may always be used for specific processes.
