An overview of the biotechnology industry in the USA is presented, describing the scale of investment into research and relevant bodies and regulations concerning the testing, release and registration of genetically modified organisms. Problems in the segregation of transgenic plant products and labelling of food products derived from them are examined in the case of transgenic maize, developed by Ciba-Geigy and Monsanto. Export markets are currently affected by differences in the status of transgenic crops in Europe and other countries which have accepted them, such as Canada, Japan and the USA.
