dc.descriptionAn account is given of the Cartisol research programme, which involved French public research institutions and private seed companies. In the first period (1990-94), an RFLP map of Helianthus annuus was constructed, consisting of 237 loci spread over 23 linkage groups. This enabled the identification of hybrids and breeding lines, and allowed the mapping of 3 genes conferring resistance to downy mildew (Plasmopara halstedii). In the second part of the programme (1994-97), quantitative trait loci for resistance to Sclerotinia and Diaporthe helianthi were identified.
