Research in agriculture is strongly affected by external trends which result from globalization. Amongst the various changes taking place, this paper examines in particular the evolution of international markets for farm products and the developmentneeds of the poorest nations. The world food situation is investigated, with prospects for the mid and long term. Whilst in Asia and in the ex-USSR mid-term prospects are not pessimistic, in sub-Saharan Africa population growth has exceeded the growth rate of agricultural production and it is expected that food aid and commercial imports will continue to be necessary. Trends in agricultural research aimed at development are discussed: some developments have led to environmental degradation. Productivityincrease is the most important area for research. Three challenges for European research are to contribute to the increase of competitiveness of agriculture whilst respecting the environment, to find its niche in the world agricultural system and to participate in the development of countries of the South.
