Brain development and polyunsaturated fatty acids.
Abstract
Studies using animal models and the results of clinical trials on the modulating effects of dietary polyenoic fatty acids on brain development in preterm and term infants are reviewed. The effect of the content of linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids in human and adapted milks on the content of docosahexaenoic (DHA) and arachidonic acids in the brain and the possibility of using fish oil containing quantities of DHA similar to that in human milk as a supplement in infant feeding are discussed. 22 ref.
