Rape cv. Eurol seedlings were treated with a range of concentrations of 2,4-D, IAA or NAA for periods between 30 min and 48 h in the absence or presence of N. Seedlings were also exposed throughout the experiment to the higher rate of 2,4-D without N, or to a low rate of IAA with N or a high rate without N. Observations after 1 month showed that 2,4-D induced nodule-like structures at low concentrations, while IAA and NAA were only effective at high concentrations. With all compounds results were generally better with N. Induction occurred after 48 h treatment with 2,4-D, while permanent exposure to IAA was required. These structures were associated with significant modification of the root system but were not comparable with N-fixing nodules of leguminous species.
