Usefulness of soil mounding treatments in prolonging productivity of prime-aged Ganoderma infected palms.
Abstract
The mounding of soil in conjunction with cultural, organic and inorganic treatments around the bases of oil palms infected by G. boninense have been reported to bring about an increase in vigour and yield of palms. Such treatments are expensive and of questionable usefulness when carried out in palms nearing the end of their economic life. A stand of 400 11-year-old (prime-aged) palms uniformly infected by Ganoderma were used to test the benefits of soil mounding in conjunction with surgery and fumigation with dazomet in mitigating the effects of infection. Soil mounding with fumigation and soil mounding alone prolonged the productivity of palms, primarily through the physical benefit of preventing the weakened boles from being toppled by wind. The cost-effectiveness of such treatments should be considered since it may take 2 or more years to recover treatment costs. Incluye 3 referencias bibliográficas.
