Plantation forestry : what the future holds.
Abstract
Plantation forestry is an important strategy in overcoming the shortage of wood supply from the natural forests. However, its future development is linked to a number of issues that need to be addressed. These are related to sustainable forest development, the wood supply-demand scenario, public versus private sector involvement, market prospects and utilization potential (examples are given of various reconstituted wood products - laminated veneer lumber, parallelam PSL (veneer strands glued for use as a structural material), particleboard, medium density fibreboard (MDF) oriented strand board (OSB) and laminated veneer board (LVB)), investment incentives, land and labour, species selection, and research and training. These issues are discussed with respect to Malaysia. 19 ref. Plantation forestry is an important strategy in overcoming the shortage of wood supply from the natural forests.
