The socio-economic impact of planting tropical timber species with plantation technology - agro-forestry.
Abstract
The problem of labour shortage and unused land can be solved by the introduction of tropical timber trees into plantations and smallholdings. With plantation management an earlier maturity can be reached than in traditional forest - within 10 years instead of 30-60 years. This possibility is illustrated using data from rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) and oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) plantations. A valuable timber crop should greatly improve the lot of rural people and the plantation sector, and should also help to improve social conditions in Malaysia.
