Abstract
The effect of N, P, K and Mg fertilizers on oil palm growth and yields was studied from 1984 to 1990 on a latosol in the Manaus region, Brazil. Three fertilizer regimes were compared in the case of P, K and Mg but only 2 in the case of N. The fertilizers were applied at rates which increased in steps as plants aged. Increasing P rates significantly improved NP nutrition, oil palm development (up to 6 years) and yields (from 4 to 7 years). A modest P rate (50 kg/ha annually) rapidly corrected P deficiency without inducing a marked K deficiency. In the absence of K fertilizer application, K contents gradually fell to very low levels, from the age of 6 years (1989), though without any effect on palm yields in 1990.
