Rubber cultivation in Cote d'Ivoire and its marketing are discussed. Commercial production began in 1953, and by the end of 1994 there were 63 835 ha of Hevea plantations, with yields of 71 420 t for 44 736 ha tapped. Cote d'Ivoire is the second largest producer in Africa. Yields are greater than in Asian plantations and the grades produced are all 5 (latex) and 10 (cuplumps). These results have been achieved by close relations between growers and agronomic and technological research establishments. Rubber cultivation was originally under state control but has now been completely privatized.
