Toxic oxygen : protection against pathogens.
Abstract
The role of active forms of O2 (including hydrogen peroxide and the superoxide ion) in plant defense mechanisms against fungi, bacteria and viruses, as well as the production mechanisms of these active forms, is reviewed. Hydrogen peroxide is directly involved at an early stage of the hypersensitivity reaction that characterizes an incompatible pathogen/host interaction; it is probably also involved at a later stage in the establishment of a wide range of defense mechanisms that necessitate the depression of host genes.
