Abstract
Commercial cultivation of oil palm started in Latin America with varied intensity in each country by the 60's, generally attending government and societies' interest to diversify raw material supplies for the local oils and fats industries, and encourage the development of potentially promissory tropical crops in rural areas. In this brief lecture, a comparative analysis of the main economic indicators of this activity during the last decades is shown, with the world and between countries of the region. The role played by palm oil production in local supply and consumption of oils and fats in American countries, as well as in the palm oil regional foreign trade is presented. Also, the type of productive models that lead allowed an export orientation of the oil palm agroindustry in America.
