Abstract
The oil palm agro-industry in America is young and growing, looking for ways to expand consumption for new and traditional uses. At present, production faces risks not only by the vicissitudes of the market and uncertainties in government policies, particularly in Latin America, but also by a series of technological problems as well as pests and diseases that other regions do not have. The oil palm in America has the opportunity to contribute to the sustainable development of the communities, and therefore, must make significant investments that enable it to comprehensively improve the crop and the chain of production, and develop technologies to ensure plant health and high yields. It also must create institutions to operate and strengthen partnerships, defining the roles that the private sector, production sectors, trade organizations and the government should play. Although Colombia is a major player in the continent, it is still a small player in the global market.
