Plantations in the humid tropics : characteristics and prospects.
Abstract
After briefly describing how plantations in the humid tropics have been set up an developed, this article makes a distinction between familyrun plantations and large specialized estates. Their main characteristics (environment, demography, organization, technical level, market integration) are discussed. Their future prospects in relation to ecological sustainability, environmental and socioeconomic issues are then considered, along with their impact on the organization of international markets.
